Veliko Tarnovo has been wonderful. I've been looking forward to mountains and rivers and forests for a while now and VT has certainly delivered. After three months in the Middle East I thought it would be a refreshing change. I was right. Two nights in a row I've said that I'm going to move on the next morning only to meet new interesting people or get invited on a new hike or mountain bike trip. If Romania turns out to be half this good I'll end up having a very good time in Eastern Europe.

The modern town is...boring and nothing special. The old city is stunningly perched on cliffs above a dramatic bend in the river. Restaurants hug the edge and have great views of the red clay roofs of the old city. In the background of it all is the old fortress that powers over the landscape.

The hostel here (Hiker's Hostel) is great and I've met tons of people - mainly Canadians and Europeans. We've done a few day hikes...never more than about 10k round trip. The beer and food have been great and I've overindulged. I am seriously going to be a few LBs heavier when I meet up with Jerramy and Lee on the beaches of Thailand.

I think I've decided on my path over the next month and will be buying a ticket to Bangkok from Prague in the next few days. I'm on my way to Asia soon! Before that tho, I'm headed to the Black Sea coast for a few days of sun and sand. Have I established that I like some nakedness and sun?

RE: Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
Wow, not at all what you would be led to believe Bulgaria was like. I love that picture of the fortress on the hill. You're right, a postcard shot. I would have bet that Eastern Europe woould have been a pleasant surprise - glad to see I was right. Looking forward to your reports from Romania and Prague.

Hope this crap in the middle east doesn't extend to the good people you met there, but the odds aren't good, are they? Frustrating and discouraging.

Enjoy the trip to Thailand. I know that is one of your favorite destinations. Travel safe.
