Another city and another good time. I'm finding over and over that I am enjoying the smaller towns and cities much more than the capitals. It makes me feel sorry for all the travellers I see doing the capital hop through the region - they are missing all the good stuff!
Plovdiv is more central in Bulgaria and is surrounded by mountains. The further I travel into Bulgaria the more mountainous the areas should become. Plovdiv is a sophisticated little community with a great old city and modern pedestrian shopping district. The shops have all been remodeled in the first floor along the streets but above many of the old facades have been carefully maintained. Streets are lined with cafes where one can waste hours sipping a beer and watching the locals strut past.
If anyone is headed this way - avoid the PBI hostel. It's shit.
Just a quick entry and on to Veliko Tarnova and the medieval heart of Bulgaria.
