Lake Nukuru would include a lot of firsts. The group, although small, would learn a lot about daily overlanding. If I haven’t mentioned it, we are only 7 on this leg of the journey. I’m grateful to have only a few people on this first leg..it’s a nice transition. We return to Nairobi in roughly a week to fill up the truck completely (23 people) for the next leg. We got our work assignments & learned what was needed…set up camp…slept in tents, etc. Nukuru was great!
We completed two game drives around the lake & both were really good. I joked before leaving that the first zebra seen would be the most photographed animal on the continent. I was pretty close! Nukuru was a good introduction…we saw countless large and small mammals and birds. The highlight for me was the rhino. We saw them on 3 separate occasions; one with her baby. The views across the flat grasslands and lake to the mountains beyond was very…Africa.
I must admit to having some feelings of regret already about my choice for this trip – an overland tour group. I’ve been expecting these feelings…the choice made was between two evils. In one case, I could travel independently as I always have. For this kind of trip, the exposure to wildlife would be limited to a few safaris. Traveling independently would take much longer and would cost much more. The benefit – much more interaction with locals. My choice was to take this overland tour to see much more of African wildlife and environments for much less…but I’m almost sequestered with westerners. When I do have a chance to jump off the truck and separate from the group I am tortured by people trying to sell me things. They are nice and polite…but insistent. Because they follow me for blocks there is limited opportunity for the many short, almost insignificant interactions that I’ve come to enjoy from my other trips.
So…I knew it would come and here it is. It’s only the first week, so I’m not going to get down on myself. I only recognize that to truly see some of East Africa I’ll have to come back another time. Until then, bring on the animals!!

How come you did not post more pictures of the zebra... LOL...
Love to hear from you, keep enjoying the animals and stay away from the Colera breakout areas... I also wish I was there
WOW! Great photos! I love to see the animals! Would love to see some pictures of the BIG cats if you see any! :)
Good pics. I'd like to see some of the lions too! Try to find Solo - he was the star of Animal Planet's Big Cat Diary a few years ago! :)
Love the pics.. Must be awesome to see in person.
