Today has given me a whole new respect for the riders. We had a later start this morning and a delicious breakfast from some of the locals and state farm agent, Randy. Then it was time to get going. As soon as I got on the bike I realized very quickly that my padded bibs (bike shorts) where going to be of little use. My booty hurt SO bad. There was no comfortable way to ride unless you biked standing up. The first 10 miles were fun. Brian and I sang a little bit and were able to keep a pretty nice speed. After the first 10 miles, I really started hurting though. Come lunch time I literally shuffled to my seat. My legs felt like they were going to give out any minute and it hurt to sit, stand, do anything. Lunch was provided by the American Legion in Heartwell and was almost delicious enough to make up for the pain. 10 miles after lunch, I sagged myself and climbed into the Penske. It stinks that I wasn't able to complete the whole 55 miles, but everyone said I should be proud to do 40 miles my first time trying long distance biking. I severely slowed Brian down too because he ended up making great time after I was off the bike. I was fondly referred to as his luggage. Even though it hurt and I will probably still be hurting the next few days, it was worth it. Not only can I say I biked 40 straight miles, but I also got to experience first hand what the riders have been going through everyday. I told Brian that they are officially allowed to complain as much as they want too. It has also given me a new appreciation for my own job.
Once we got to the hotel, I went straight to the hot tub and soaked forever. We had Mexican tonight which was also delicious. Now, I am sitting back and relaxing for tomorrow.
We have 40 miles to Aurora, NE tomorrow. Usually I would say only 40 miles, but now I know what that is really like. Mike Claver and Louis (two state farm employees) are going to try out the tandem tomorrow too. They are lucky though because Brian bought new seats today.
