Yesterday was a grueling day for most of the riders. We left really early in the morning with the first group of riders (8) who conquered a very steep 18 mile hill climb. We started off as the lead for the first 9 miles just ahead of Marc and Matt and then pulled off to make sure the rest of the riders were okay. Little did we know, when we pulled off there was a gorgeous view of the river and a waterfall! Utah has definitely been my favorite state so far as far as scenery goes. After all the riders passed we followed Andrew up to the top of the hill. It was pretty painful to watch. It was such a step climb that he was averaging about 3 miles an hour for the majority of the last couple of miles. He finally made it to the top and we sped ahead to set up a water stop. Along the way to the lunch stop we passed Stuart and Frosty on the side of the road. Stuart had managed to get two flat tires and luckily caught it before he began a steep decent. We picked up Stuart and Coree, whose brakes were screaming, and made it to the lunch stop. Only a few minutes after we arrived, Kevin came in really upset. Apparently a car had honked at him and nearly run him off the road on the way down. The same car just so happened to be at the gas station so he went over and laid it on them. Kind of embarrassing, but apparently this was no where near the first time Kevin has had this happen to him. Motorists are either very supportive and give the riders plenty of room or really rude like the one Kevin encountered.
After lunch we went ahead to our hotel and checked in everyone and unloaded luggage. We also met up with Jeremy's parents along the way, who drove up from Arizona. The riders started coming in shortly afterward between 3-5. While I was waiting, I messed around in Seth's wheelchair. Bad idea since I ended up flipping backwards while trying to do a wheelie. It hurt a little bit, but it was more funny than anything. We then went next door for dinner at Clarke's that was delicious! Nothing at all like I was expecting. I got the Wild Mushroom Pesto Penne Pasta which was still awesome even though my taste buds are practically nonexistent right now.
Today has been very low key. We had pancakes over at Clarke's and a short staff meeting this morning. Amanda and Van are out now driving the next few day's routes. I have been given orders to rest up to attempt to finally get better. We are leaving tomorrow for Escalante which should be a very short day since it is only 40 miles.
