Where I stayed
I moved hostels to a place closer to town. I managed on the day of my move to find an english book store and bought a Jap/Eng dictionary as well as a new camera (mine broke the piece of shit). Then I slept some more.
I woke up on 10/20 feeling well for the first time since arriving here. I met a Spaniard named Asair and we spent the afternoon together. I had my first decent meal here (soup), we went to a temple called Kiyomizu-dera which was terrific. It had a good vibe and a lot of really cute school kids hanging around. After, we walked around a food market and generally, I spent my first pleasant day in Japan with this man. Asair left me in Gion to go back to work so I proceeded to walk around, espy geishas, and try to see beyond the beige. I wanted to eat dinner somewhere before going to the Gion Corner culture show but the restaurants have no appeal to me - they look just like the houses. It's very odd.
So, naturally, I went to Starbucks, got a slice of quiche and a coffee and chatted with some nice fellow travelers. I went to the show which was expensive but pretty interesting. Then, I was feeling so well, I went back to Starbucks and got my promotional discounted second coffee at 9pm. I walked back to the hostel listening to my ipod (because its so freaking quiet here despite the people and all the cars). I sat in the Zen Cafe next to the hostel and talked to some older locals for a couple of hours and went to bed. At 1am I got out of bed and spent the next couple of hours chatting with a British couple who had a snorer in their room.
I woke up in the morning and went to a market at a temple, I walked around for a while and continued to feel crappier and crappier. I ended up going back to the hotel and sleeping for the afternoon. I got another terrible night`s sleep that night, along with the menses, and woke up very unhappy. I think I might be allergic to Japan...
