Got up, ate lots of bread for breakfast. It was so tasty. Hot chocolate was rich too. Left for the train station. Got our ticket and waited, but the train didn't show. Turns out the train was late 25 minutes and switched tracks. Went back to the ticket people and they switched the tickets for us and didn't make us cover the difference, but we had 4 minutes to catch the next train. All out sprint with 50lbs on the back and just made it. Jacky almost didn't and fell backwards, however, I caught her and pulled her back up. Got to Vienna and travelled up to the hostel. Set out around the area to see if we could find a smaller room besides our dorm. Asked a number of people and finally found one for the next two nights, so off to sleep in the 16 bed dorm tonight.
Ljubljana, Slovenia; Vienna, Austria
Slept very little last night due to a very loud snoring man
. Damn near killed him. Moved our stuff up to the next hostel where they were so very friendly. Do Step Inn it was called. We would have to move our stuff later to a private apartment they gave us. So out we went into the city. We decided to first head towards the Schonn Palace, a former seat of the Hapsburgs, where the monarchy was dissolved. The palace was enormous and magnificent. From the 40 room tour of the Grand part of the Palace we then went to the Bakery where we watched how to make apple strudel. From there we walked part of the Palace grounds taking a nap under some trees. The grounds were massive. We then went to the maze garden, before wandering up a large hill to a big structure that overlooked the city. The view was stellar. Down the hill we went and we decided to stop in at the zoo. Founded in 1752 or so its the oldest zoo in the world. There were so many animals there. We left around 6:45 after having some backpack issues. We spent almost the whole day there and didn't even see close to all of it. A wonderful place to visit. I would like to perhaps see more of it someday. After the Palace we headed back to the apartment, got some food, and called it an evening.
Much better sleep last evening. Finished our pizza from last night and headed out for the day. We started by going to Saint Stephen's Church and walked down the main shopping road there to the Philharmonic. The Church is a very large gothic structure. Very dark, a lot of statues, I like those kinds of places. Anyway continued down the shopping street. Cute, but expensive stores. From there I did a whirlwind blitz seeing many buildings: Hapsburg Palace, Parliament, Rauthaus, beautiful rose garden
. Barely scratched the surface. Going to need some more days here sometime in the future. Went up to the Danube Tower. Looks very similar to the Seattle Space Needle. Up to the top. OK view. The park that surrounded it was great though. Rose gardens, Ping-Pong, Mini-golf, tennis it was wonderful. I am truly jealous of their parks here. I am jealous of their efficient subway/bus/tram system which runs frequently, on-time, and tells you how much time you have to wait till the next train comes. They also let dogs on the trains, makes me hate the T. After the Tower went to the giant ferris wheel. Nice little piece of history to ride on. Watched sunset from the top of it. Cross town in a few minutes and watched X-Men 3 from our assigned seats. Back for some sleep. Thinking about moving to Europe, or going for a long distance kayak trip or something. I still want to see so much that I am missing here, but want to see more elsewhere in the world. Confusion of the future has begun to set in.
