Day 16

Awoke in Florence.  Ate breakfast Pork's in some supermarket enclosed type thing with lots of butchers.  Walked the Florence version of Canal Street, but didn't buy anything.  Waited on line at the Duomo for about 45 minutes.  Then walked to the top, 463 steps.  At 210 or so there is a stop that looks at the murals on the dome.  Magnificent.  The bottom layer is of hell and demons, giving way to the middle layer of angels and saints, followed by the top of the mural where the Apostles  say with Jesus and Mary.  At the top was a stellar views of all the city, looking out into the hills.  Came back and caught a train for Venice.  Caught our bus out to the campground, which is like a scene from Van Wilder.  Pop-up tents, bungalows, and various other modes of sleeping.

Quote of the Day:"Sir can you... No" Gentleman in Venice asking me to take his picture.

Places: Florence, Venice: Italy

Day 17

Woke up this morning and hoped the bus into Venice. Meandered towards San Marco and along the way stopped in many shops, and even got a little ice cream at 10:30.  It was damn good.  Got to San Marco around noon and waited on line.  Inside the church is layered in magnificent gold and paintings.  Peeked into the treasury to see the vast riches of the church.  Backing up a few hours we had stopped into a Basilica and saw enormous marble sculptures.  While we were there the children's choir was practising for their upcoming concert.  They were truly moving.  Back to San Marco.  We went from there to try to find a hostel on the other side of the city.  What an adventure.  3 hours nobody knew where it was and when we finally got there we found out it was an abbot, so no boys allowed.  Shock and laughter must describe the scene.  The nun made some random girl give us directions to another hotel.  We walked into a Jewish ghetto from WW II.  Only place in town with police.  Got some supplies at the supermarket and headed in for the evening.

Quote of the Day: "Yeah sisters, you know."  From woman that was forced by the nun to give us directions.

Day 18

Awoke this morning not feeling well so we stayed at camp till the afternoon.  Got some laundry done, relaxed, that's about it for the morning.  Went in around 1.  Tried to find a store to return some things and that was an adventure.  It's hard to take the same route twice here.  Headed back to the train station and got our tickets for Slovenia.  Headed on a mission to find a meeting and had to stop about every block and ask for directions.  Finally got there and it was another abbot.  Sister made me wait until exactly six to come in.  Had dinner at a tourist trap.  Met some guy from the States.  He told us where to eat in Venice, and we told him some things to do in Florence.  Overall, very nice relaxing day.  Ended with some ice cream.

Day 19

Yeah definitely sick.  Went into Venice this morning, and got some medicine.  Walked down to San Marco, and went to the Doges Palace.  Went in and it was stunning.  Lots of art work, gold, and fine woodwork.  Got yelled at several times for taking pictures.  Whoops. Went from there to the Corner Museum, Archaeological Museum, and another one.  Not really a big fan for the last three museums.  The Stairway of Gold was marvellous and the prison was interesting.  The walks were covered in charcoal drawings and poems.  We strolled back, ate some calzones and ice cream, and went back early and took it easy for the rest of the day.  On to Slovenia in the morning.
