Day 12

Well I was correct in the lack of sleep.  Wound up sleeping on the floor in the cafeteria.  Got in at 5:45 am, and it was raining.  Had to walk about a mile and a half to get to our bus stop.  Rain stopped and we had a crazy dog follow us as he chased all the cars.  Finally got our bus to the campsite at 7 when the buses started running.  By this point I was miserable.  Got to the site and we had this cute bungalow.  Slept until 11.  Took a bus back into Corfu and got our ferry tickets to Venice.  Walked around Old Town and did some sightseeing and shopping.  Saw the forts, but did not want to go in them.  A nice relaxing day.  Went back to camp and played some games.  Hung out in the bungalow and took it easy by candle light before heading to sleep.

Places Corfu, Dionysus Camp Grounds.

Day 13

So it was a good night of sleep.  Woke up to the sound of rain.  By the time we left the hut it had stopped raining.  We rented a scooter "Big Red."  We drove to Paleokastrista which is famous for its lagoons and coves.  On the way it started to rain so we played cards for an hour.  Then we went to a monastery for the Virgin Mary.  We played with some puppies there and got locked out below the monastery.  Some British man let us in through a large iron door.  We got kicked out at 1pm for mass though.  So we went and explored an old Byzantine Castle.  Had to pull over again for the rain.  The fort needed much repair as it was abondoned for 200 years.  Drove back in a rain storm which pierced the soul.  At a good dinner.  Caught the last bus into town, and now waiting for a ferry in the morning.

Quote of the day: "Your not smugglers are you?" - British guy at monastery.

Places visited: Paleokastrista, Angelokastro

Day 14

Well the night was hell.  No sleep, bad music till 4am when Radiohead came on.  Lots of Yahtzee and cards.  Minoans office opened up over an after  after they told us to be there.  Boat was almost 1 1/2 hour late.  Upgraded to a cabin for the ride, nice, enjoyed lots of showers.  Food was horrible topped off by bad service, led to sickness.  At least we got a free breakfast cause of it.  We are on our way to Venice via boat and should be there in the morning.  So at least the bed is comfy and the showers are hot.  Next time will fly.  The Greeks not so good with the hospitality thing.

Places: Corfu, Ferry to Venice

Greece the Final Say

Two weeks in and here are my impressions.  First the Greeks smoke way too much.  Second not the most hospitable.  Third the Greeks don't age well, especially the women.  Fourth the cheaper the food the better.  Most of Greece seems like a German tourist area; especially the Ionians.  The ruins are beautiful.  Would love to see the rest.  Scooters rock, great way to see the islands.  Olympia is very nice.  Many people don't speak English.  As everywhere city people are annoying, and country people are nicer.  The Greeks can't drive for shit, but they have great meat on a stick.  Worth coming back, if just to relax.  So till next time onward to Italy.
