Ischia turned out to be one of the most fun places that we have been so far. We only happened to know about the Island because we had been told be a couple of fellow backpackers in Nice that we had to go there after Naples. We didn't know what we were getting ourselves into because no guidebooks even mention Ishia. The morning we left Naples, the weather was great and we were really looking forward to a relaxing couple of days with a lot of beach time. The hostel we got to was quite nice, a lot of friendly and very helpful people. That first night we went to the beach and just took it easy. That night Eric went out to eat with some people from the hostel with the hostel owner because his family owns a rester aunt and every night he brings a group from the hostel their for a good Italian meal. I decided not to go because I was already about two boxes of wine deep, not very hungry and I found the terrace at the top of the hostel where many other travellers were just hanging out and telling me not to go because the meal takes about 3 hours (which Eric testified as being true).

The next morning, we didn't really have any plans other than maybe going to the beach but while walking around town we spotted a scooter rental shop. We figured that we had nothing to lose at it was only about 36 dollars for the entire day which is nice because in the past when we had rented scooters we had only rented them by the hour, but then you feel guilty if you want to stop and get something to eat or go to the beach so we figured all day was the best option.

The guy asked us if we wanted to get the 50cc bike or the 125cc one. Hey buddy, what the hell do you think? These things had quite the kick, I was very impressed with both the speed and acceleration capabilities. Now in order to rent the bikes, we had to prove to the dealer that we had the necessary skills to man these complex machines. He pointed to a small 15ft*15ft area and said "ride!" What the hell was I supposed to do? So, I proceeded to ride in about 5 circles and then he said "ok, that will work." Now it was Erics turn. He gets on and what does he do, he guns it straight into a small rock wall and the guy starts shaking his head and saying "no, no." After a little bit more convincing, we got to rent the bikes. One funny thing about renting the bikes was that all we needed was to show them the drivers license and then hand them 30 euros! We could have given the guy a fake I.D. and stolen the bikes. I couldn't believe how little documentation was needed for the rental of the 1500 dollar bikes.

We decided that we were just going to try and go around the entire island but starting off with going as high as we could. This ended up being one of the most fun days that we have had so far, although, very dangerous. Driving around this island is like being on an illegal racetrack. You can pass anybody at any time, around corners, drive on the left side of the road, run red lights, what ever you want you can do, it was a blast. After only about 5 minutes of leaving our hostel to head out around the island, Eric got a little cocky and tried to pass some other guy on a scooter and ended up eating shit right in front of about 150 people. He wasn't injured but I think his ego took a good beating. I had one incident going about 40 miles an hour when I went for a pass move around a young girl on a bike and the car behind me had the same idea only about 2 seconds earlier than I, which was a very good thing. I swerved left and collided with a car and is scared the shit out of me but I learned that I should probably look before trying that again.
