Today we had to be at the Washington Memorial by 9am.  We walked as it was only about a 10-15 minute walk from our hotel.  By the way I have to mention that I get constantly reminded that I walk too fast and that Roxy feels like she has to run to keep up with me.  So yeah, I feel like I am crawling around Washington D.C. and I have to walk veeeeerrrrryyyy sllllooooooowwwlllllyyy... :-)
The top of the Washington Memorial is about 500 levels hight with a great view of Washington D.C.  Following that we made our way toward the Lincoln Memorial.  On the way there we saw World War I, World War II, Vietnam War and Korean War Memorials.  I couldn’t believe the number of dead Americans in all of these wars - it is astounding.  The Korean war for example had 100s of thousands dead Ameriacns (not counting the other countries) - see photos.
They are also doing a number of memorial renovations around here before the peak tourist season starts in Spring/Summer.  The Lincoln Memorial was impressive.
We then walked to the FDR Memorial and on the way there we saw the construction of the Martin Luther King Junior memorial.  We continued walking to the Jefferson Memorial which is being renovated as well.
Next stop was the Holocaust Museum - now this was some creepy stuff we found out in here.  Pretty sad really... Pity we were not allowed to take any photos inside this museum.
Final activity of the day was going on the tour bus and visiting significant areas of Washington like the area of Georgetown which is very expensive and there are no bargain stores there, only upmarket stuff.  Here the taxes are determined by the width of the residence and not the actual house area.  On the tour we also found out that there are 70 Starbuck’s coffee shops in Washington D.C.
When we returned - we were pretty much only good for bed.  Except for Roxy that is - Macy’s (David Jones/Myer equivalent) had a one day sale and guess what, Roxy had to go.  Save me!
It was a busy day but well worth it.
