OK you have enjoyed Cheryl's gift of writing up till this point, now its my turn, scary as that may seem. Cheryl gladly opted out of writing our Nascar experience knowing that I was totally in heaven the entire time.

We pulled off the freeway to a sea of cars doing the same that Saturday afternoon, silly me thinking that getting to the track at noon for a 7:30 pm races was early enough, not. As we made it closer to the track I remembered the advice given to me by a cook at a local watering hole near Dave's house that there was free parking at the ZMAX dragstrip right accross from the speedway. Sure enough we crested a hill and there it was, not only the Charlotte speedway but also the ZMAX dragstrip and a dirt oval track. I had to have Cheryl pinch me, I thought I was dreaming, it was beautiful, all the best racing in one spot! I could only imagine having a week when there was a race at each track, but I digress back to the race

After cruising through the vendor trailers and sponsor booths we walked down to the infield for Dirks Bentley concert, I think that was why Cheryl went in the first place but the show was good. We made it down to the garage area where we were fortunate enough to see, Dale Jr., Mikey Waltrip and Joey Lagano. They were all zooming around in golf carts and I barely had time to give them a yell and wave as they sped off, kinda like when they are on the track. The race was a kick in the pants with lots of bumpin and grinding, the crowd enjoyed the fact that Carl Edwards passed Kyle Bush and won the race, I was bummed that Dale Jr. wasn't a contender.

The next day we were treated to entry and a tour of the Nascar Hall of Fame by Dave's good friend Jo. The Hall is an amazing museum of Nascar's history and tribute to it's legendary drivers and founders of the sport. Cheryl and I even tried our luck at being a pit crew, I changed the tire and she jacked the car and filled the tank, it was a hoot! I will have to make a return visit someday as there was so much to see and do it was like sensory overload.

Like that wasn't enough but then Jo took me on a tour of the Nascar garages, we visted Ganassi/DEI, Richard Petty Motorsports, Roush and Hendrick garages and also drove around the Concord airport which is basically the airport for the teams, drivers and owners. Each garage allowed visitors to see in the garage area where teams of mechanics were working on multiple cars, they also had several cars in the showroom and of course the all important souvenir shop. Hats off the Hendrick corporation, they had the most amazing complex with two separate showrooms, one for Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin and the other for Dale Jr. and Jimmie Johnson, by the way while we were at Dale's and Jimmie's showroom Jimmie walked thru and up to another shop just for employees, very cool.

It was an amazing two week stay, we had a blast working on Dave's new home and seeing all the southern Nascar charm. It was time to move on and start working our way west, I squeezed the bus (our granddaughter Emma calls it that) thru Dave's gate, we said our final goodbye and headed off. We had initially thought about headin up to Knoxville TN, but a string of nasty weather pushed us south to Fair Play S.C. where we will wait it out a couple of days. By the way as we left Dave's house we passed the 5000 mile mark for the trip!

A couple of shout outs:   Dave thanks for letting us invade your new home and letting us participate in helping you get ready to move in. You have a really nice park, lol. Jo, thanks for the tickets and tour of the hall as well as driving me around Charlotte, we had a great time!
