We left the van and caught the blue metro bus to the city. We weren't really prepared for the enormity of the earthquake devastation and the randomness of damage. Some structures such as multistorey car parks and building complexes appeared virtually unscathed from our view but were fenced and abandoned and apparently waiting for demolition.
Even Christchurch Cathedral; looking at it from some angles looked relatively unscathed but is the saddest sight from  other views and we were told a recent high court ruling has agreed total demolition and rebuild is the only feasible way to go .

A critical shortage of building materials was not enough to daunt the spirit if the locals
when it came to revitalising the destroyed city centre following the deadly
February earthquake.
Re:START, The pop-up mall was created It began with 27
retailers and now features 41, including four banks. Encouraging  retailers and visitors back into the inner city,  it is made up of shipping containers, all vibrantly and uniquely configured to give an amazing fresh outlook to an otherwise very sad metal fenced  landscape.

While at the Re-START village we met The Wizard of New Zealand.  It's no use me trying to describe the aforementioned man. Best you read about this remarkable character on wikipedia!

Adversity does seem to bring out the best in us south of the equator. You would make a good bus conductor Beth. xoxox

Hi Beth and Russ,

Thanks for including us in your blog. Very sad to see the devastation but the strength and creativity of the population is inspiring. Enjoy your trip and keep us in the loop.

Hi Beth & Russ, great photos, interesting to see how the retail industry has bounced back, big shame about the cathedral, it was a nice building and loved the wizard, thought for a moment it was Gandalf :)
