This week I'm going through final preparations prior to our departure on Sunday, May 3rd.  My son Ben and I will leave LAX Sunday afternoon for Lima, arriving around midnight.  We will camp out in the airport lounge area, then fly to Cajamarca early Monday morning. We'll be in Cajamarca for two nights before leaving on a driving trip eastward through the Andes Mountains, to the edge of the Amazon jungle.  We'll visit some ancient pre-Incan ruins in the Chachapoyas area, before moving on back to the northern coast of Peru.  We'll visit Chiclayo and Trujillo, then fly on to Cuzco.

After a few days in Cuzco and Ollantaytambo, we'll begin the four day Inka Trail trek, finishing in Macchu Pichu on May 20th.  We'll leave the next day for Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. We'll spend one night on an island in the lake, staying with a local family.

We'll finish our trip by way of Colca Canyon, home to some of the Andean condors and deep canyon sites, then on to Arequipa, an old colonial city surrounded by volcanoes.  We'll fly from Arequipa back to Lima, spend a day touring the capital city, then on to home.

I spent two years in Peru as a missionary back from 1972 to 1974, but haven't been back since.  From everything I've read, at least a few things have changed since then!  This will be my son Ben's first trip to Peru.  Hopefully we'll be able to add a layer of wonderful experiences to those I've always cherished from my first visit way back when.

I'll try to keep you all up to date on our travels as internet cafes and so forth allow.
