Man oh Man....Today was insane. The hotel set up for us a driver with his own "limo" (as the hotel called it- turns out it just had A/C) to take us around to the sites. This guy called himself "Egyptian Bob". I should have realized right then, but we had a chuckle and started our journey. Bob took us to Memphis and Giza for the pyramids and the sphinx. A few stops of really old Egyptian tombs and monuments. (Sorry for the vagueness- if you want a history lesson-Google it!) I forgot most of what I saw anyway. All I really wanted to do was ride a camel around the pyramids. After all, that is why I flew across the world anyway. Well mission accomplished, but not without some struggles!
So we drive to this "place". It was narrow dirt roads in between houses and stables. All over were really skinny horses with their bones sticking out, camels with tons of locals riding them, and kids playing in trash. Lovely. So Bob stops at this place. A man with not a full set of teeth greets us and brings us into his courtyard front yard area. He proceeds to write the "prices" of riding a camel into the dirt. I'll spare you all the sad painful details of the haggle. Basically after unloading all our US money and Egyptian Pounds, we settle on the official dirt posted price of 500 Egyptian Pounds each. Feeling a little uneasy with the deal, we mount up, ready to take on the pyramids!
Two young boys take the camel's rope and lead us up. Lets sum it up with....it was long and hot as balls. The area all around the pyramids is pretty bare, except for water bottle trash and lost flip flops from fellow camel riders.
We made our way back to the man's house that owned the camels. After a few "walk like an egyptian" jokes, we said good bye and were on our way with Egyptian Bob in our Limo.
Now here is the best part.......We come back to our "hotel" and told the nice guys that work here how it went. When they found out we paid 500 Egyptian Pounds EACH, they laugh and say we could have bought our own camel with just a little bit more money! Great.......
