We arrived in the Sinai to a beautiful sunrise. It was about 07h00 am and finally we arrived atSheikh Salem House in Dahab after a short taxi ride from the motor coach terminal to theGulf of Aqaba, Red Sea!! After a nearly 10 hour bus ride I was ready for sea and fresh air
April 11-19 20012
After a two year absences.. I realised of all the countries, places beaches, seas, villages in my travel career and personal travel since child hood…. My love for the Red Sea keeps growing. My first experience with the Sinai was in 1992-1993. My first experience with the Red Sea was as in infant. My mother always says that because I was born at the Red Sea it will always be the place I want to come back to.
We arrived at Sheikh Salem House and I did not recognize the staff except for Gomma. It was so sweet he actually remembered me. My bags where brought to the room I have stayed in several times The front one next to the office facing the sea. The room has a sink, fridge, private bathroom and two beds, though I only needed one. There was some room confusion as I did not ask for a double room but got one..
Mohamed from Sudan-Aswan was managing the place.Nice guy with a sense of humour.
Caroline and I settled in and bought some water, munchies from Asaala the Bedouin village just a few minutes walk from Sheikh Salem. House. Then we took a walk into town to put up the fliers for her events during the Dahab Festival which she was giving which was starting up in a few days.
We stopped for breakfast at Eel Garden and Raphael my Italian friend who used to cook for me was gone but the place had been spruced up..
I could no believe how quiet Dahab is. Hotels are empty, restaurants, shops. We had the place to ourselves. Great for us not for the industry. Just home after the May elections things will change
Every day would begin with Mohamed or Gomma bring Julia and I hot milky coffee while we sat at the Arisha and enjoyed our morning coffee. We lazily lay on the cushions, swam, had breakfast, talked about life, dancing, teaching, travels and journeys, left our things their for dance classes with Caroline or picked up snorkel gear and always came back for our sunsets.
Sheikh Salem House is the last hotel towards Aasala. The location is great because you are away from the busy parts of Dahab but you are close enough of a walk along the cornish with lots to see.
Close to the bridge and light house are the places that divers tent to stay. Sheikh Salem is kind of like a home away from home for many of us.
Since I work in the travel and tourism industry and travel around the world for work the one thing I do not want to see when I am not working is a high end hotel because they sometimes have no personality or character which you do have here.
What I was looking forward to was the Bedouin Bread with garlic and cheese hmmmmmmmm!!!
I had it twice which is probably why there are no vampires at Sheikh Salem and why nobody was going to try kissing me any time soon. lolololololol
The place is chilled and relaxed. I love the arisha and the fact that it is close enough yet far enough from everything.
Souk El Gomma ( which is Friday market) at Sheikh Salem House
Visitors, locals, people passing by come to see what there is to buy. There are lots of different foods and goodies. I tasted tested the Wara Eineb and there was a winner. There was Russian, Sushi, health foods, breads. Hmmmm
Nicole was selling racks of clothes for everyone and every style.
There was jewellery being sold
By three pm the place was packed with families, lots of children
Water and Beach in front of Sheikh Salem
The water is pristine and clear with good snorkeling, shallow enough for swimming for those who can't with pockets for those who can. We saw stone fish and lots of species around. When the water is calm is it magical . When the water is rough its for Windsurfers.
Its not commercial, over run, too busy its just the right number of people and room for all.
Rooms at Sheikh Salem House
The rooms are clean and they do a great job at cleaning the room. It is probably time to change the mattress as those with back problems will not have a restful sleep.
When I last stayed there there were cups, spoons in the rooms but they aren't there. I asked for one with no problem of course. Bought myself a kettle so I could have a 06h00 cup of coffee and oatmeal before my morning walks and run. Befor anyone in Dahab was awake.
There are budget rooms with shared bathrooms upstairs
In the evenings everyone gathers under the Arisha to chat, have a bite, check e mails, read. Even with a windstorm it is a great place to hang out and chill.
I have been to Dahab in November, December, January, February, March, April, July, August. I think April is the best month as the temperature of the water is getting good enough for swimming.
All of the photos taken were taken by me personally. The blog is my personal opinion and thoughts.
Enjoy the photogs and reading
