The next few days were very chilled, just catching up on emails and some admin stuff and Lenin invited me to stay for a while longer and go with the band for the final concert of their tour in El Salvador that weekend - of course I agreed!
We left on Thursday 6th of July and drove the 3 or so hours to San Salvador, the capital city. Border crossing was once again interesting for me - photocopies were made of my passport etc etc but by now I have become accustomed to my "oddity" status. It may have helped that the official recognised Lenin as being part of Alux Nahual.... The drive was stunning - beautiful views, mountains, valleys, hills, rivers - really incredible. It´s so strange to think that a few years ago such a violent civil war was going on in El Salvador - people are weird.
Anyway, we checked into the Radisson (!!) since they were one of the tour sponsors :-) and went down to check out the concert venue which looked great but very empty - all was to change by the next night! We went out for some dinner that night to a place called La Ventana - well, I could easily have been anywhere in Europe. I was so surprised! Great wine, excellent food - happiness!
The next night was the concert - fabulous! 4000 people packed into the venue, great stage and lighting, excellent music - really a cool gig. Alux Nahual had not played in El Salvador for about 10 years so the crowd were so excited to see them. I missioned around videoing for most of the night which was fun - they are going to make a DVD soon and hopefully will use some of my footage. After the concert we went off to the exclusive afterparty at an even more exclusive club... again my little hillbilly jaw dropped at the sophistication of the design and lights etc - although the music was an interesting mix from raggaeton and salsa to 1980s pop hits and obscure country tunes ;-) we had a fab party though and got home at about 5am - good form I thought!
On Saturday, after a slightly delayed start due to the previous evening´s festivities, we drove down to El Puerto del Libertad, a seaside town, with some friends and had lunch in an interesting restaurant - with a pool in the middle of it and lots of kiddies running around while their parental units enjoyed rums and cokes. The restaurant was set on a black sand beach and we walked along that for a bit afterwards - its so different for me to see black sand beaches, I always think they´ve been hit by oil spills or something! We drove back in the pouring rain and since we were all exhausted, squished into one room and watched tv movies and had room service that night :-)
We drove back to guatemala the next day, after watching the World Cup final and cheering loudly for Italy. ra ra!!
