We were picked up from the hotel at 10am and bundled all our bags and belongings into the hire car which was a newish Nissan Note. Dunc was disappointed that it didn't have a mini-fridge as stated when we booked it, but he put his refrigeration woes to one side and we were soon on our way to Akaroa passing lots of beautiful farming scenery driving very slowly up the steep hillsides and arriving at Akaroa at lunchtime. The bay was beautiful, the water looked so clear and was full of quaint houses painted in pastel colours with a small beach with families digging sandcastles. We got together a picnic and ate it by the beach in the sunshine. Stomachs full we drove on and as suggested by the girl at the car hire place we headed inland to Lake Tekapo.

We got there around 5pm and we were both astounded by the turquoise blue lake, it was mesmerising. We went to the tourist centre who suggested a couple of camp sites after checking out both the sites we finally setup our tent in the better of the two just by the lake.  Our first attempt tent pitch didn't take too long and after a snack we took a stroll to the sublime moonlit lake shore. As novice campers we had put the tent up on a slope so it wasn't the most comfortable night's sleep, but we will learn!
