For those not aware of Route 66, this is the piece of tarmac (dust track in some places) that links Chicago to Los Angeles in the USA and was the route used by thousands as they left the cold depressed east coast to the prosperous sunny new world of California back in the 1930's.
R66 is no longer a recognised highway due to the takeover of the freeways that now link most US cities together, but the road still exists, and unlike travelling the freeway, R66 still goes through all these old towns and spots that would normally be missed.
You could call it, 'the real, old America' and that's the reason many want to travel this road, to experience the nostalgia of old America as many of these places still withhold their history unlike the fast pace of the freeway and its numerous big brand 'chains' that line along them.
Although I am not a man who would turn down a Taco Bell or KFC once in a while :)
R66 is a 2500 mile stretch through 8 states of the US, (Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California) so for a lover of all things Americana (the wife probably not so obsessed) this trip could be seen as the ultimate experience for the two of us to encounter.
When? That is the big question, 2013 should be the year and anything from May to September is seen as the ideal time to drive R66.
So watch this space...........
