Got up early and drove to Tintern Abbey. We walked out the back behind the pub at Tintern Abbey.
We carried Mom's wellies because we anticipated a lenghty walk and we didn't want her to have to spend the whole day in boots.  As it turned out she needed to put her wellies on just past the town of Tintern as the mud was pretty bad.
Lovely walk along the river , kayakers, crossed bridge, old stone put-in, propeller, horses and then the sun!
Made the 4.5 mile turn around point easily so we decided to walk up to St Briavels (due east instead of going back south)  Took the wellies off 1/2 way up - turned very steep - a little navigation trouble - .
St Briavels turned out to be a gorgeous little village with a good (romanian) pub named Royal George (like in Tintern - not sure if they are related). And the castle was intact - being used as a hostel.  After splitting a steak sub and 2 beers we continued the route across the top instead of going down to the river.
The afternoon turned out to be the best part of the trip with a common, sheep, navigation error through someones farm, and a slow descent with many pretty homes - sun was blazing - but still cool. We decided to take a shortcut on the east side of the river so that we could go across the footbridge in Tintern but a blocked gate and navigation errors made the trip an extra 1/4 mile. 11.5 total.
Ran into some hikers in the Tintern parking lot who did the trip south to a view of Chepstow while we went North.
The sun and Dad made it one of our best days.
