I was just finishing packing to go away for the weekend when Manuel arrived with Roz and Rachael, two new volunteers who will be working at the local zoo. Get the feeling it is turning into quite a sociable household.

Decided not to go into the office because of our impending trip to the jungle. Had a wander around the centre of Santa Cruz before lunch then stocked up on some fresh coconut for the 2 hour journey ahead.

Went into the tour office to pay. Despite knowing precisely what we wanted to do this still took several hours. Bureaucracy seems to be everywhere with masses of paperwork to complete. I guess it's just a way of life here.

We got a taxi down to the old bus station where we changed onto a Trufi. A Trufi is simply a shared taxi which goes when it is full. We shared with a bloke carrying some engine parts on his lap and a couple of lads who shared the front seat. At £1.20 for a two hour ride it was a bargain. The Trufi stopped for fuel halfway and I saw a good idea for monopolising petrol station usage. I had a free drink and snack served by girls in a skimpy red top and very short, white hotpants. I'm sure it would work at home!

Anyway, we got to Buena Vista which turned out to be a beautiful town on the edge of the jungle. W found a couple of cabañas (rooms in wooden houses) for next to nothing and, after a quick bit of Spanish practice with the staff, showered and set out to explore the town.

Buena Vista is so mellow and chilled out but there's not a lot of choices of places to eat and drink. Still, a few beers sat out on the edge of the plaza and we soon felt relaxed. An early night was called for though as we were starting early in the morning.
