So here I am, at Cold Spring Harbor, not dead or even mugged!

So on the 14th I flew out of Wellington, not before being charged $200 for one extra bag by Air New Extortion-Zealand. Got to Auckland without incident, and subsequently onto flight to San Francisco. The plane was pretty empty so I could put my seat back without feeling guilty! Got through four movies on the flight: Lincoln (boring), Argo (not boring), Taken (awesome), Taken 2 (not as awesome). So a bit of American history in there, and a whole bunch of Liam Neeson, who is awesome.

The flight ended with me talking to some guy from New York who had just been on holiday to NZ/Aus. Apparently he's been travelling for 3.5 years and has finally run out of money. He had seen more of NZ than me, which made me feel pretty hopeless! I should also note that there was a call for a MD or nurse on the plane, since I booked through Webjet I couldn't put Dr. on my tickets, which would have allowed me to say "Sorry, I'm not that kind of doctor", which I have been waiting to do!

Next flight was from SF to NY, a 6 hour flight, once again sat next to a real-life New Yorker. This guy was a journalist from Reuters, and was generally more pleasant than the other guy. During this flight I started to get a bit beyond tired, occasionally nodding off for a minute at a time.

Arrived at JFK slightly early, a big fat guy was waiting for me at baggage claim, holding a thing with my name on it, stoked! He didn't seem to like his job much, but was pretty cool at any rate. His car was super-flash, all leather interior and complementary bottled water (I didn't take one, it seemed too extravagant).

My accommodation is...ok. I have a rather small room with three Harry Potter cupboards, of course all my stuff is strewn across the floor at the moment. For some reason the thermostat is set to 82 degrees and I can't change it. So I opened the window...unfortunately I'm facing a highway so it's a bit noisy...

Yesterday (the 15th?) I sorted out a few things at CSH, the campus is quite pretty at the moment with all the snow, and the harbor/inlet is partially frozen. I managed to go into Huntington in the afternoon (the nearest "village"). It seemed nice, there were banks and places that sell phones and supermarkets. Cell phone plans surprisingly expensive ($35 a month was the cheapest, but had unlimited txt and data). I didn't buy anything exciting, except for Long Island (brand) Iced Tea from some super-expensive organic boutique supermarket (ugh!). It was delish mind you, although not remotely alcoholic.

Now it's today (the 16th?), I am suffering from jetlag and woke up at 11am, missing the last shuttle to the train station. Alas, no city trip today...luckily I can go into Huntington again at 1.30, maybe I'll buy a cell phone this time...or some more of that iced tea.
