So we left Quito and headed off into the hills. Have had an amazing couple of days staying in an Eco Lodge up in the mountains. Stayed at a place called the blacksheepinn.com which was fabulous and in an ideal position to go and explore. The view overlooking the area is just amazing, especially at sunrise. Full composting toilets and vegetarian home cooked meals. Fantastic ! Best view from a toilet ever !

The first day after our arrival, we did an all day trek which visited Laguna Quilotoa a
volcanic crater lake at 3800 meters above sea level. Suffered a bit from the altitude (it makes you quite breathless and you have a dull headache) but we pushed on through and completed a 7 hour hike through the valleys and mountains.

Still having trouble walking (the downhill paths killed me) so steep you had to run down them like a goat. Had a laugh surfing down a sand bank though !

Stopped for breaks and lunch rather optimistically early in the journey and spent a pleasant half hour playing with a trumpet blowing group of children who were mesmerized by Margo's bubble blowing. A trick that has taken her all over Peru ! You would be amazed how excited they got chasing the bubble around and they were desperate to see the digital pictures of themselves!

Our group of 5 gringos got so lost it is embarrassing. Went up and down and up and down these cliff sides reaching dead ends again and again. Finally we met a girl called Carmen (our saviour) who was farming in the hills. She led us down then up a rather (and by rather we mean hugely, massively, enormously) precarious route back to the path. You will have to see the photos to believe it!

And then, of course, got lost again !!! Ended up walking on the wrong side of the valley only to spot our destination village as a small speck on the horizon half an hour later.....

No complaints though we pushed on through over rivers and finally got to one of the villages on our map. Never before have I been so glad to see a small sign for coca cola !

In a state of euphoria from the caffeine and sugar we made it back to the trail and eventually made it home after the last hour of near vertical uphill. Nearly killed me...
how am I going to make Machu Pichu ????????

Collapsed back at the ranch and had a relaxing sauna to finish the day and recall our adventures that day. A truly amazing experience !!!
