Deir Al-Quruntul Monastery or the Mount of Temptation is the traditional site of Jesus' 40 days of fasting and temptation in the wilderness.  The day was obviously teenage girl day because the site was swarming with giddy school girls who were more than willing to start a conversation with any tourist that would give them the time of day.  I was one of those tourist, and in the ensuing conversations with them and their teachers they attempted to try their limited English skills on me.  Their English was light years ahead of my Arabic, which happens to be nil.  The girls liven up the place to say the least, but their demeanor was probably not in keeping with magnitude of what happened here so long ago.  I could not fault them because teenaged girls are teenage girls no matter where you go in the world.  A giggling talkative energy that is still a mystery to me.  What is not a mystery is that our Lord Jesus Christ was tempted in the desert for 40 days or at least at the end of the 40 days when he was at his weakest.  By the Word of God he did battle against the evil one and prevailed.  Where Israel had failed in their wanderings in the wilderness Jesus succeeded through the power of the Word because man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.  To God be the Glory, Amen.
