I remembered looking at photos of the Canary Islands before I left and I saw one of the beaches had a ton of sand on it. It was hard to judge how much it actually was. They could have been small or very large sand dunes. Turned out they were large. I think they are 8 kilometers across and 1 kilometer deep before you reach the water. It was like being in the Sahara and interestingly enough, just across the water lies the western Sahara on the northwest side of Africa. Maybe the rest of it is at the bottom of the ocean when the islands split off many years ago.
So complete with sand storms, steep drop offs and the heat, we walked through the desert at Maspalomas.
