Where I stayed
We went on a morning walk with a few other guests and a guide called Binu. He was very knowledgeable about the local plants and life in general on the island we were staying on.
First, we saw a hibiscus plant, apparently you can use it for hair oil to keep your hair beautiful.
Second, we were shown a pepper plant. It looks like a stem with little green balls sticking out of it.
Third, we were shown a betel nut. It is yellow and disgustingly bitter but used widely as a mouth cleaner.
Fourth we saw some sticky but very pretty purple flowers that stick to almost anything and is the flower of the long bean plant.
Fifth, we were shown a plant called tapioca, a bit like the potato but long. Our guide, Binu made a beautiful necklace for me from one of the stem with the leaf as the pendant.
Sixth, we saw a water snake ripple through the water.
Seventh, we saw a banana tree with a bunch of bananas and hanging below was the blood red "heart" which can also be eaten as a delicacy.
Eighth, we were shown a cocoa bean it was fascinating as I had been learning about it with Jupiter class last year.
Ninth, we saw some school children leaving for school on the school boat. What a fun way to travel although you have to be careful about not toppling into the water with heavy bags!
Tenth, we were shown a brilliant pink flower which is actually shaped as a star. Great hair accessory!
Eleventh, we saw the mud from the river being used to strengthen houses and used as ferterlizer.
Twelth, we saw ladies slapping their clothes against the stones to get the dirt out. They also bathe and clean their teeth with horrible black stuff which we were told was charcoal in it.
Thirteenth, we crossed a wobbly bridge, which was just a plank over he river.
Fourteenth, we were shown the coffee flower and there were little beans growing out of the sides.
Fifteenth we had a lovely Keralan style breakfast (coconut and green beans) which we ate with our hands and Scarlett had about 8 poppadoms!!! I tried the sweet chai (tea) too but didn't really like it!
Next we went to the boat stop to get back to the guest house but it never arrived . We were then told that there was a boat strike. So we had to wave other boats down to get back. What an experience! Finally a boat agreed to take us home to green palms.
When we go back we played with Mable,Rachel, Anne and Anneena then decorated the Christmas tree (palm tree).
