Today we take the bus back up the coast to Bentota. It takes about 3 hours and is somewhat a depressing journey; more so than the train we took down.

The tsunami had a devastating effect of the west and south coast of Sri Lanka and even now more than two years later its evidence is still at large. Mass grave yards are scattered along the road side every few miles, they are like shrines covered in colourful flower garlands, bunting and pictures. However it's the graves in clusters of 2s, 3s and 4s that pull on your heart strings, even more so when they lay next to the house that still bears the scars from that fateful day. So much money has been raised, I know children back home who gave their pocket money after seeing those awful pictures on the news, yet now faced with all this I wonder where all those millions have gone? Yes we saw a few housing projects and we met two lovely young ladies (one from USA and one from Belgium I think the latter is correct) who have come to work out here for the UN (United Nations). We hope they make good progress and wish them every success in what they are doing.

So eventually the bus drives straight through Bentota and stops at the next village/town; Aluthgama. Now I know the guide book says Bentota is a small quiet place but when we drove through it looked like it had closed down! And to make matters worse as soon as we step of the bus with our bags we are besieged upon by what seemed like every person within a mile radius. We literally dive across the road into a restaurant for cover and a cup of tea. We admit defeat and decide we've simply had enough of Sri Lanka, it's a horrible place and head back to Colombo hoping we can get the hell out as soon as possible. We jump on a bus and head back to the same guest house we stayed in before and its just our look that it is full till tomorrow, so we stay up the road for one night and will move down there in the morning.

To be continued. . . . .
