Uruguay is an unassuming little country that is famous for its horses, fantastic meat, and for people carrying thermos flasks with them wherever they go just in case they need a cup of mate tea when they're at the bus stop or in a traffic jam. It also has great beaches, which was enough of a reason for Shane and I to take a quick visit to this little country.

The historic port town of Colonia de Sacramento is only one hour away from Buenos Aires by very bouncy boat. Luckily, we got through the journey without exposing the contents of our stomachs although for me it was a close shave. It was already dark when we arrived at our hostel, so we set out to see what nightlife the town had to offer. It was minimal – there were just a handful of cafes on the main street. It reminded us of any little Outback town in Australia, where you don't need to look before crossing the road and where nothing ever happens. But it suited us just fine after the hubbub of Buenos Aires. We ate some pizza sitting outdoors and watching a tiny piece of the world go by, then got an early night.

The next day, we had a couple of spare hours to look around the port before we our bus was due to depart. It was a very pretty place with single-storey colonial buildings, a peaceful main plaza, a big, red lighthouse on the jetty, and upmarket sailing boats in the harbour. Lovely, yet soporific, and, as our guidebook suggested, a day was enough time to spend here.
