Today we visited Devils Tower which is located in Northeast Wyoming. It is a 865 feet high rock column which is actually the core of an ancient volcano exposed from millions of years of erosion. There are many boulders and rocks around the bottom which are broken pieces that have fallen from the column. It is a popular place for rock climbers. We passed on that! But we did hike part way around the base. It has an informative visitors centre. The area is sacred to the Native Americans and climbers are asked not to climb in June out of respect for the Natives

We travelled northwest across the northeast corner of Wyoming through the arid rolling hills. Wyoming is rich in coal, oil and gas. We read an interesting newspaper article about high school teachers moving to Wyoming from Idaho because the pay was so much better. One teacher's salary went from $25000 to $57000 by the move. Wyoming has stated that they feel it is important to put the wealth from their resources into education.

We stopped in Sheridan in late afternoon.
