040310 St. Maarten:  We arrived early morning to our final stop at the Dutch town of Phillipsburg, St. Maarten.  After breakfast, we began the disembarkation process.  After many goodbyes to new friends and receiving our passports, we left the ship.  We loaded our luggage on an air conditioned bus and toured the Dutch & French sides of the island.  We visited a should-not-have-been French nude beach and shopped in tourista French St. Martin.  We encountered St. Maarten rush hour with miles of two lane, bumper to bumper traffic seemingly going nowhere.  Our tour ended at the Dutch-side St. Maarten airport where we tried to check our baggage for the flight home tomorrow.  No luck.  We then hailed a taxi and headed for the nearby Royal Turtle Inn for check-in.

After settling in at the Royal Turtle, we walked a mile or two to the end of the airport runway to Sunset Beach to watch jets land and takeoff.  Awesome!!  We got sand blasted!  A guy got blasted into the sea with his camera just before we arrived.  The runway starts right after the beach.  We had drinks at the nearby beach bar and had a ‘blast’ watching people and planes before heading back to the Royal Turtle.  I had a few of the excellent 'Desperado' French beers.

Upon our return, Tom, Bone & I had an excellent dinner at the Royal Turtle Inn's over-the-water restaurant, our last meal in St. Maarten.  I was able to Skype Bill for the last time on this voyage with the free WiFi.

On to TC tomorrow! Homeward bound at last after almost two months at sea.  What an awesome experience this has been!!

Hi Walt, been awaiting all your updates, shame you all missed Tortola also,, what a long strange trip it was, (at least the first 34 days) and sounded like you had more drama on the last two weeks as well. I see the Wheatleys from Canada in the background of your pic of Bone on nude beach,, I do love the pina coladas (and some views) on Oriente beach,,, always make a point of stopping by there! Did you go in the magic cave while doing the crawl at the Baths in Virgin Gorda?? Another favorite spot.

When you get settled give a shout, I will be in Hong Kong April 15-23, and will catch up with another fellow sailor, Robin from Wales, who crossed from Athens to India with Morag, his wife, with me in 2007. He will be in Hong Kong starting off a long tour of China, so we will meet up the first day after I get in, then I have a week of work then home. Am thinking there will be some trips to Singapore for business in coming months as well, so that will keep the frequent flyer miles accumulating! Still thinking will book Royal Clipper for July 7 trip from Venice to Rome, got agreement from my manager to take more frequent leaves (without pay of course) from my job before I retire,, whhooo whoooo!!

Take care, fly safe if you are not already flying, and hope the Easter Bunny is (was) good to everyone! Hi and love and hugs to all my buddies,,, send emails and cards when able,,, and Walt, thanks for all the blogs and pics,, Gail

It was great to hear about the 'rest of the story'. Thanks for sharing pics at the end, they were mainly people we know. Have a blast (pun intended) getting home (your turn to sand blast someone).

Cheers,
Sue & Ed

Walt/Gail/Sue/Ed/etal - We are still in St.Martin (Anse Michel) on a balcony overlooking the beach and beautiful Caribbean. (Eat your hearts out!) We leave for our respective homes (CA/MI) tomorrow via MIA. A great 3 day respite from the crowds and noise but the deck still moves! Walt, you did great job on your blog. I'm referring my (100) readers to your site. Corrections - Gail and I were rubbing noses (eskimo kisses) & those were lattes, not cocktails. (8:00 AM?). C U in Elk Rapids (Siren Hall?) sometime this summer. Best to Tom & Bone.
