Tuesday, February 16, 2010:  Bora Bora, the name itself conjures up images of native tribesmen and sounds of drums off in the distance.  I awoke early & was up on deck, coffee in hand, as the Star Flyer sailed past lush Huahine (we'll be there tomorrow), the most sacred Tahaa & endless Raiatea (2nd largest to Tahiti).

Then, as the mist lifted like a curtain call, there in the haze appeared mystical Bora Bora, with it's iconic towering volcanic mountains.  Bora Bora is about 140 miles northwest of Tahiti and is surrounded by a large lagoon and barrier reefs.  The mountains (Mt. Pahia and Mt. Otemanu) are the remnants of an extinct volcano, the highest at 2,400 feet.

We made way through a small opening in the ubiquitous coral barrier reefs and moored off shore.  No tribesmen, no drums greeted us…albeit, the snorkeling was superb!  Hundreds of colorful fish surrounded me after I plunged off of the Zodiac, obviously accustomed to tourists and expecting handouts.  I used my underwater camera housing for the first time and it performed wonderfully.  I dove down 5 meters to a coral head and saw my first wild octopus, which instantly changed from brownish green to black.  By the time I pointed my camera, the large octopus slithered down into a crevice and disappeared.  Too cool!  I watched with excitement as multiple colored Parrotfish bit off chunks of coral and expelled freshly made coral sand, oblivious to my presence.  This was heaven on earth!

After reluctantly returning to the ship, showering & changing, Gail, John & I made way by tender to the sleepy village of Vaitape.  This is where the infamous Bloody Marys Bar & Restaurant resided.  No cabs in site, Gail flirted with a 4X4 tour guide and negotiated 25% off our round trip fare to the bar.  Contrary to what I had read, the Bloody Marys were spicy & excellent and the service was fast & friendly.  I couldn't resist...I bought a spicy BM shirt.  Could this be Bali Hai?

I agree with Bone, you should write a book -- great skills.
