San Antonio, Texas 14th-28th October, Maccy Ds etc abound

Well arrived in San Antonio Sat 14th October after a five hour car trip from Dallas with Kev, the couz and Collins, the loser. Thought it was funny that it was exactly seven years to the date since Mum, Dad, Adi and I left Shannon in 1999 for American shores.

A great time was had in SA..Despite the fact that we did a lot, we also had plenty of time to relax (which was much needed after the hectic time I had before leaving Eire), wind down, plan our trip and eh..er..eat! My Aunt Maria┤s home-made cookies turned Collins into an absolute Monster!

The original plan had been to leave on Saturday 21st but we ended up staying until the 28th as there were so many tempting reasons to stay on.

There were many highlights in San Antonio but perhaps it would be easier if I did them in a type of Chronological order.

On the Monday, we got to go "on duty" with San Antonio police Department and visit a real crime scene. Whilst I felt rather voyeuristic and a little intrusive on the family of the dead man, the experience was invaluable. We got this opportunity as Sean Walsh, my Uncle Sean┤s neighbour, is a detective there.

On the Friday, we undertook another adventure with the aforementioned Walsh when he brought us out shooting his many guns. We shot every type of gun imaginable--derringers, dirty harrys, the machine guns they use in Iraq, the ones they use in CSI Miami. I was class with the ones where you could focus on your target through the use of a red light but I was brutal with the handguns. My wrists were just too weak for the kick back. I know I┤m not a born assassin anyway cos I was bored and ready to finish up halfway through whereas Collins could have gone on shooting forever....not that I'm saying he's the next Jason Bourne or anything:)))

Collins, my Aunt Maria and I took a trip to Seaworld on the Sunday for their HallowÚen show to see some dolphins, whales and sea lions in action...I still haven┤t parallelled my conflicting thoughts on this issue. On the one hand, these mammals are very intelligent and they provide great entertainment for people when trainers stimulate this intelligence. But on the other hand, they are out of their natural environment and no matter how big their tanks are, a killer whale┤s natural impulse is not to entertain humans. I'd be leaning more towards the latter view, me thinks.

On a lighter note, I nagged Collins to go on all the rollarcoasterish rides and after much himming and hawing, he agreed. The look on his face was priceless. Heights are not something he takes very well. Course I had to keep my side of the bargain then and go on the Rio Loco which was a doughnut style boat that went down a crazy river...We were naturally the only ones on it in October and we got soaked...It was 8pm at night and contrary to popular belief, it is not still roasting hot at nighttime in SA in October.

We also went into the haunted garden which gave Maria and I a few frights!

The following Friday, Collins and I went up on the Tower of the Americas with Ryan Walsh (some of ye might remember him from when he was in Ros. One of the neighbours┤kids) Great view of San Antonio and once again, Collins┤ face was priceless.

The night before we left, we went to a San Antonio Spurs┤ b-ball game with our tickets costing 105 US dollars (the front row seats cost over 600..like hello┐┐┐???) They were playing the Dallas Mavericks so we got to spout out the knowledge gained from the game the week before! This time, we did see Nowitski play for the Mavericks. Togging out for the Spurs was Tim Duncan and of course the Spurs┤Tony Parker (going out with yer waaan Eva L from Desperate housewives). Borris Becker was also in one of the front row seats with a Brazilian looking gal (quite possibly his witch from the wardrobe!) Nowitski gave him five at half time..The Germans stick together I spose.

Collins and I went to a gym over there for two days and there is defo nothing to compare with it in Ireland..each treadmill had its own tv and in the ladies dressing room, they had the usual showers etc but also a hot tub, curlers and a straightener! I would have looked savage by the end of it if the boys hadn┤t been waiting for me!

I really enjoyed San Antonio. I got to catch up properly with my Texan relations there which was great cos it┤s always so hectic when they visit in Ireland.. (I┤m at fault there, it has to be said) I have an undevelped theory that you don┤t really get to know someone until you see them in their home environment and although I was there in 1999, I now saw their lives through a adults┤eye. For example, if you think of the people you meet on holidays or in college, it┤s not that they are putting on an act or anything, it┤s just their home life is another facet of their personality...psychological babble I know!

I got to see a show in the Children's┤theatre where Kev used to work, the quilting shop Maria my domestic genius Aunt works and I visited both of my Uncle Sean┤s offices...I also did a few personality tests on myself in Sean┤s (he┤s a psychiatrist). The results explained quite a bit actually. I┤m a thinker (NOOOOO I hear you all shout in absolute amazement!) which means I analyse feelings etc instead of actually feeling them...it was soo strange, I felt like I was reading about myself...people think I┤m angry when really I┤m just trying to make a point! etc etc

Everyone in Ireland always thinks the US is very big when they come to it first but I defo think Texas exceeds all other states...big buildings, big trucks, big servings of food..and of course, big personalities... Thanks to my familia and their neighbours, I┤d a great time.

Oh and the answer to the question all ye ULers have been looking for...Collins did not get to lob the gob on any 16 year old. There was lotsa eye contact, flirting etc but either he didn┤t think it was worth the wrath he would have felt at the hands of multiple gun owner and Dad Sean Walsh or she saw sense..either way, nada happened..
We left Sat 28th to go to the Mexican border,McAllen....
