Later, the whole tribe took the Metro and then a train out to Ostia Antica. Ostia (mouth - as the mouth of the Tiber) was the ancient seaport of Roma. It was a wealthy and important town in its own right and has extensive and amazing ruins. Nothing truly monumental like you find in Roma itself, but a lot more that illustrates the basic day-to-day life of ordinary people. Homes, temples, baths, warehouses, taverns, shops and so on. Most are just partial walls and mosaic or inlaid marble floors but at least one building is so intact that you can climb staircases up to the roof of the second level and look out over the expanse of the city. There is a small amphitheater and forum. Most of the construction is brick in various patterns but there is some use of marble and blocks of tuff.
It was a really clear, cold day and a little windy. It must have been about 5 degrees. We were all a bit worn out when we got back. M & M cooked up a simple pasta first course and pork loin cutlets with apple and potato for a main.
