Barkerville today is a historic town. It was first built in the early 1880ies and burned down in a fire in 1886 but was rebuilt the very same year. It's called Barkerville because William Barker has found gold in this area at the Williams Creek which caused a gold rush to this site. However, as most of the other gold towns, Barkerville had its high times but after about 15 years, when the gold rush over, people started to move to more lucrative places. Some still remained in Barkerville until the 1950ies. In 1958 Barkerville became a historic provincial park
