June 23-24, 2005

Hey everyone, the morning after the Louvre, June 23, Chris and I headed out to Verdun, a small town in central France. Verdun is a special town, because from the middle of 1916, for 300 constant days, Verdun was the sight of some of the bloodiest fighting the world has ever seen. we arrived in town around 1pm, and went to visit the tourist center. well, there we found out that the actual battlefield was about 10km away, and that there were no buses to the battlefield. having already rented bikes to tour Normandy, we looked for a place to do the same. well, we looked everywhere, and finally, one shop owner told us that there were absolutely NO places that rented any sort of vehicle in Verdun..we decided to hang out in town for the night and to take a taxi the next day to battlefield.

they next day, June 24, we woke up, bought some bread, and found a taxi to take us to the battlefield. we got to the main museum there, and saw that. it was pretty neat. they had uniforms and vehicles from the battle, and lots of pictures from that time period. Verdun was the worst battle during the War, over 700,000 people lost their lives in the fighting. after the museum, we walked to the main cemetery where over 15,000 french soldiers are buried. along the way, we decided to try our luck at hitchhiking. it worked out great. the first person that went by stopped for us. it was just this guy, a film maker from Washington, DC, and he gave us a ride to the cemetery. it was great..after the cemetery, we saw Fort Douaumont, and several different "ghost" towns. before the battle, there had been little villages all over the area, but during the fighting, they were reduced to nothing but rubble..after the battlefield, we called another taxi and headed back into Verdun proper. we got a bit to eat and headed to bed..
