hello all -

well, after waking up in France, we headed off for the Louvre, probably the most famous museum in the world. the museum opened at 9am, we wanted to get there early to try to avoid the crowds and lines, so we got there around 8. well, it wasn't so bad waiting in line, we were right at the front so we'd be the first into the museum. unfortunately, at 9, some little man from inside came out and said the place wouldn't open until around 10. it was a bit depressing, but we stuck it out, and got inside around 10am. the museum is absolutely huge. there are only three wings to the Louvre, which used to be the palace of the french monarchy before it was moved to Versailles, but each wing is quite large, and there are pieces of priceless work to be seen everywhere..we saw the apartments of Napoleon III and the code of Hammurabi..we also saw the Mona Lisa, the famous painting of the smirking woman done by Da Vinci. it was in a room by itself, and there must have been at least 150 people in there trying to snap a picture..we did the same, and escaped back outside. after the Louvre, we went to Versailles, which is the famous palace outside the city established by Louis XIV. it is probably the most ornate, tremendous palace in the world. it even made Schoenbrunn look tiny in comparison. unfortunately, the most famous room - the hall of mirrors - was closed due to renovation, but we did manage to see the war room, which was full of huge life size paintings of famous battles..even though seeing these two things might seem to take no time to see, it was getting dark after we finished at Versailles..we did manage to find some great food, here there are little shops owned by Lebonese, or Greeks where they serve sandwiches called Kehabs..stuffed with meat and onions, they are just excellent snacks..well, after our busy day, we got some rest and prepared for our short trip to Verdun, the following day..
