What I did
Wandering around the old town and souvenir shopping
A four hour bus drive south from Zhangjiajie lies the old town of Feng Huang, a short distance from the new town of Feng Huang. During the bus ride there, we were awed by the Hunan countryside's spectacular beauty, at times reminiscent of the Verdon region in France.
The old town of Fenghuang appears almost unreal, in the sense that it doesn't seem real: parts of it have clearly been built quite recently. Nevertheless, it has a certain charm and attracts massive numbers of Chinese tourists. We wandered around the old town for about a day. It isn't very big and most of it consists of souvenir shops, basically all selling the same stuff. A fine aspect of local life turned out to be the river food.
Bus from Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang: ¥65
