On out first full day in Austria, we took a scenic drive up the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße to the base of the Großglockner, Austria's highest peak at 3,798m. The long and winding road took us through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery I have ever seen. It was a clear, sunny and relatively warm day, making the high altitude experience quite pleasant and the views fantastic!
Then we proceeded to drive down the other side of the mountain pass to the village of Heiligenblut. This picture postcard village is exactly what you imagine when you think of quaint alpine villages. We only stopped long enough to take a few pictures and visit the small church, and then we headed back up and over the pass back to Zell am See.
