What I did
Sambodrome Rio de Janeiro
Read my review - 5/5 stars

The whole Rio Carnival concept really didn't hold great appeal for me... Until I experienced it.  I am so glad I have had this experience!  There is almost no way to describe the SambaDrome that does it justice.  It is an enormous, bigger than life, explosive celebration of Brazilian life and dance and music.  The colours seem so intense that I felt I needed to adjust the dial.

The floats are at least two if not three stories high.  The crowd is about 85000. We watched the displays of 6 Samba Schools.  There are 12 schools in the competition and each has at least 5000 people in the parade.  The enormity of it is impossible to imagine.  Each school chooses a theme.  This year the themes included Rock and Roll, Germany, the river between Brazil and Bolivia, a famous poet, fame and the history of their own school.  So the visuals incredibly diverse.

There is fierce competition between the schools and the producers are lauded as superstars In their own right.  Some of the choreography was amazing and some of it just looked like heaps of people dancing ver casually together.  The costumes were so colourful and some of them were so opulent!

Each school has their champion dance pair and they do dances for the judges who were right across from us, so every group danced really enthusiastically in front of us! Also there are the guest samba dancers, all women, whose costumes cost many thousands of dollars.

In all honesty, I could rave on for ages.  I have so many photos that you can. Have a look at and hear the stories if you like. It was impossible not to get swept up in the celebratory spirit of the night.  Julie, Helen and I got home at six this morning. Exhausted but so glad we had experienced the SambaDrome.

Hi there sweetie - you really are having a holiday of contrasts! - the wild grandeur of the waterfall and the rainforest and vultures and other critters, to the wild mayhem of mardi-gras with all the colour amd sound and energy! Sounds like you picked just the right spot to watch it from. You seem to all be having a fabulous time and I am loving following your trip! Lots of love xx
