Where I stayed
Palazzo Carpegna
Mostly a day of driving from Venice to Rome today.
However, we did have time for a quick walking tour of central Rome. We had views of the Coliseum and other ancient parts of Rome. We also toured the Pantheon – an amazing engineering feat and a stunning building.
The Obama's were in town for the G8 summit and many of the streets were blocked by police. Michelle Obama toured the Pantheon about an hour after us. Some of the group managed to get pictures of her, but she didn’t join us for a beer and pasta at a café we took over. Another expensive dinner and 10 euro ($20 AUS) for beer and 9 euro for penne pasta and tomato sauce. It was a smaller serve than our entrée. We are still waiting for the next course to arrive.
Next stop was one of the fountains in a scene from the movie Angels and Demons – the one where the priest nearly drowned.
Last stop was a quick view of the Vatican and St Peter’s Basilica. The Pope was in town (returning from his summer residence), probably to meet the world leaders that are in town. You can tell has the light is on in his bedroom! Tomorrow we take a closer look of St Peters and Vatican City.
This is our first two night stop. Nice not have to get the suitcases out the door by 6:30am and do some washing with the hope of it drying!
