The infamous Sedlec Ossuary has been on my wish-list for some years, and this was only reinforced when Ewan and Charlie visited on the Long Way Round trip.

You can read a detailed history of the place in Wikipedia, but in summary an estimated 40-70,000 bodies were buried in the grounds of the chapel, and in the 1800's a half-blind monk decided to do some interior decorating with the bones, including a chandelier containing all the bones of the human body.

The place leaves you rather lost for words, but we managed to come up with "amazing", "oh wow" and "obscene' . The display is supposed to remind you of your mortality, but I found the whole place so far past bad taste it was back into good again! Definitely worth a visit.

Icecream in the shop opposite was pretty good too...

Update: Lots more pics added to Flickr

i can't help but be amused that across the road from the church of bones, a bastion of death and mortality to sober the lightest hearts... is an icecream shop. i can't wait to find out if Auschwitz/Birkenav has a giftshop. thats just.... *shudders* i hope they dont... really.... last thing i want to think about is a converted gas chamber full of slinkies
