The morning started with a trip up the Auckland SKY Tower, the southern hemisphere’s tallest building, standing at over 320m tall. The weather was really good and afforded some great 360° views of the city and suburbs (pictures uploaded).
Headed out on the Fuller’s ferry to tour a nearby island (Waiheke) which is a 40 minute sail away. Following the ferry, a group of us took a coach tour of the island which took a couple of hours and took in the landmarks of Oneroa (the main shopping street), Palm Beach (funnily enough a beach!), Onetangi (another beach) and Ostend (the commercial centre, complete with a Woolworths – of the Australian not UK variety alas)
After a couple of wines and some bread with olives, I took the decision to tramp it (walk through hiking trails) back to the ferry terminal of Matiatia via Blackpool. With no 'Stag & Hen’ parties, drunken Glaswegians, candy floss and rock, etc. this is the complete antithesis to the Blackpool we all know (and love?!?). The walk is probably the longest and most tiring walks I have ever done – great for the regime! I managed to scrape back to Matiatia with 10 minutes to spare before the ferry left – only thanks to the friendly islanders who pointed me the right direction each time I got lost (next time I will take a map and compass and not drink wine beforehand!)!
Picking the hire care up first thing tomorrow and heading to Whakatane (the pronunciation is rather unfortunate) where I’ll struggle to get online. I’ll be back on the blog in a couple of days or so.
