Landed at Auckland airport at 07:00 after a good but tiring flight with Cathay Pacific. After making my way through customs and bio-security (sniffer dogs actually walk down the carrousel jumping over the bags to detect non-permitted substances ranging from diary products to drugs) I got the shuttle bus into the city which took about an hour in Auckland's rush hour and dropped me off at the SKYCITY Grand hotel.

The hotel is part of a large entertainment complex built by Harrah's Entertainment (an American casino developer responsible for Caesar's Palace and Manchester235 amongst others). The complex includes 2 hotels, bars, restaurants, a casino (which so far I have managed to avoid - but it is poker night tomorrow!) and the SKYCITY tower (promoted as the tallest free standing building in the Southern Hemisphere, which you either bungy jump from or simply observe from - I think I prefer the latter!).

After dumping my bags at the hotel (my room was understandably not ready) I hopped onto a city tour bus (ok so I didn't actually hop on to the bus as that would have potentially dangerous giving my hopping abilities) near to the ferry terminal at Princes Wharf, even though I was so tired.

The most notable stop on the tour bus was at the Auckland Museum, which had a couple of key themes running around Sir Edmund Hilary, Maori culture, the Commonwealth and is also home to a war museum.

After an hour at the museum I headed back on the tour bus towards the city via Parnell Village - an upscale area of Auckland home to bars, shops and where many of the solicitors and accountants base themselves. Due to lack of sleep and not the content on offer, I nearly fell asleep on the tour bus - a great idea if you want to offend a tour guide!

Getting off the tour bus at SKYCITY, I was able to check in to my room and my head soon hit the pillow. Sleep had got the better of me for the first time on this trip!
