We ended up having a really nice drive into Washington DC, the countryside was beautiful & we think some of the houses may have been trying to outdo the White House. We had decided to stay at a national park about 12 miles from DC, Greenbelt & catch the train in every day. The park was huge & hard to believe you were so close to a major city
Woke up early this morning to light rain & they were forecasting thunderstorms for the afternoon so we were a bit unsure whether to go in today or not but by the time we had our breakfast it had cleared a bit so decided to head in. We were glad we did as it turned out to be a really nice day, overcast all day but in the high 70's & a really warm breeze, a good walking day.
And we did plenty of that. After sorting out the Metro system & their ticketing it only took 1/2hr to get into the city. The rest of the day was spent walking, we walked & we walked & we walked some more but it was the easiest way to see everything. We know we did at least 7 miles & probably more. We went to the Capitol Building, the White House, up the Old Post Office Tower. We walked from one end of the National Mall to the other & lots in between to see the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial & the World War II Memorial & Washington Monument.
A lot of the places were having work done on them. As you can see from the photos they were working on the Washington Monument & normally you can get tickets to go up the top but it was all cordoned off. There was also a huge police presence around the Capitol Building & the White House, areas that you can normally go to were cordoned off. After speaking to some of the security guys we found out it was because of the Boston bombings, none knew how long it would continue for. Washington is normally security conscious, with everyone having to pass through scanners & bags checked every time you go through a museum.
We didn't get back to the park till about 7pm & about 15 minutes after arriving home we got the thunderstorm they had predicted, lots of thunder & lightning & rain, at least it held off till we got home.
