Called in to the White Sands Missile Range this morning, because it's military had to get a pass to go to the museum. They had a large display of old missiles outside the museum, managed to spend a couple of hours here. The first atomic bomb testing was done at White Sands, they also had sniffer dogs they used to take out to track down parts from missiles that had been tested there. The dogs were taken to the general area where the missiles had landed & could usually locate the parts within an hour, saving the military many days work.

The missile range was first used for testing rockets captured from German armed forces. The range is 4,000sq miles & is still an important site for testing experimental weapons & space technology. The highway between Las Cruces & White Sands National Monument may be closed during missile range tests for safety reasons & this averages twice a week for 1-2 hours

A bit further up the road was White Sands National Monument, which is closed when they do missile testing. It is the largest gypsum dune field in the world & covers 275 sq miles.

Arrived in Roswell late in the afternoon so will have a good look around tomorrow
