Camped at Kings Canyon Ntl Park last night, the road up was quite windy & we are at 6,500ft elevation so the temperature is great, a beautiful breeze. This morning we did a walk around General Grant Grove, which is home to a huge stand of giant sequoias. These differ from the coastal redwoods in that they are much larger around whereas the redwoods are taller.. We then moved down to General Sherman Tree Trail to see more giant sequois, including the largest one by volume in the world, estimated 1,500 -2,000 years old.
From there we caught a shuttle to Moro Rock which is a granite dome rock formation. A stairway has been built to the top with 400 steps & has tremendous views over the whole valley. Being afraid of heights it took me a while, met up with another Australian girl who was the same so we talked each other up, Ray had gone on ahead as I didn't think I would make it, it was incredible.
One thing we have learnt is, if you go up you inevitably come down again & the road back down was very windy & as they were doing roadworks one lane was closed for a few miles. It was much warmer once we got off the mountain so found a spot by the lake to camp for the night, & even went for a swim.
