Sunday October 7th. Madeiras have disappeared over the horizon as we head west at 16 knots.
Last night was quite rough and it was difficult to sleep and the swell is expected to moderate over the next few days. The ocean is quite empty now with no other shipping seen and there are no birds or signs of life just empty ocean as far as you can see. The afternoon was spent relaxing and catching up on sleep and reading. This ship is a freestyle cruiser which means you do what you want when you want. There are lots of activities during the day and night to entertain you if you wish or you can entertain yourself. Dining has many options and it is quite challenging restricting your food intake.
Last evening show time introduced a couple of the acts for this week, a juggler and an ex-marine turned singer who has a superb voice.
Monday October 8th. Position 30.50 N and 32 15W. We have travelled over half the distance from Copenhagen to Florida. After a leisurely breakfast with our new friends from Florida, David and Pauline we found a shady table outside on the ships stern. Our friends are English and after emigrating to Canada soon after marrying they moved to Florida about 10 years ago. They have done a lot of cruises and are off again in November.
We decided to skip the a la carte lunch and stayed topside where we had a snacky lunch and chatted till it was time to get ready for happy hour and dinner. Such a hard life this!! Then after dinner the concert featured the sounds of the 60's. It was very good and enjoyed by all. The average age of the cruise would be over 60 I reckon.
Tuesday October 9. Position 29.40N 41.12W. We have sailed 3440 nautical miles from Copenhagen and have just over 2000 NM to go to Florida. The swell has moderated a lot from a few days ago and it is very pleasant cruising with the weather getting warmer. Another lazy day reading and relaxing and enjoying happy hour from 4 till 6 before dinner and another great show. Comedian Darrell Joyce was very good and then it was time for bed with the clocks going back another hour.
Wednesday October 10. Position 28 39N. 52 17W. 1500NM to go to Miami. Today was the warmest day and after breakfast we found a spot on deck 11 and read for a good while before having a swim in the pool. Lovely sunny conditions, a temp of 25, slight blue ocean with a few light clouds. We have seen two other vessels in the distance, the first since leaving Funchal on Saturday. Off to happy hour soon and then dinner. The show tonight is Jon England, Piano Showman in 'Rhapsody in Red, White and Blue' This was another great show and he was just brilliant. He is playing again tomorrow afternoon so that's a must see. After his show we went to Dazzles night club and enjoyed a Tenessee Whisky while listening to the hits of Elton John. Excellent.
Thursday October 11. Position 28 13N 59 21W. Another great day crossing the Atlantic. Fine and warm and reading, sunning and swimming was the order of the day till it was time to go to the Jon England matinee. He played for an hour some great pieces from the 50's and 60's in particular. Amazingly he cannot read music. He has a website and we will look him up later on. Happy hour followed the show and then it was dinner time again in the Four Seasons before the show time which tonight was the juggler we had seen earlier in the week. After the show it was a soak in the jacuzzi on the pool deck before a hot chocolate and then bed time.
Friday October 12. Position 27 00N 66 30W. It is warm now, about 27 by 8.30 and some showers forecast but New York is only 12 tomorrow! The winds have strengthened and the swells have increased as there is a tropical depression in the south Caribbean so there is some side to side movement again. We have dinner with Mac and Gina from Maryland who we first met on day 1, he is a retired United Pilot and Gina worked as Cabin Crew. We had a lovely meal together and exchanged emails. Another great show time with the return of the ex marine tenor. He has a fabulous voice but his name escapes me for the moment.
Saturday October 13. Sea is rough and rain squalls are quite heavy from time to time but it is not cold. Late in the afternoon we intercept another cruise ship to port and follow them into Miami. Our final dinner is followed by the last show Time which was a spectacular rock music show by the Suns dance troupe. Enjoyable though not really our music scene. Off to bed with an early rise to disembark after breakfast then once clear of immigration we will head for the Amtrak station and the silver star. A fabulous 14 days, a great experience!!!
