After our initial concerns with the stairs and the lack of air conditioning we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our initial plan was to buy a 10 trip ticket for the local transport but when we discovered that we were staying very near the old Roman city and the Jewish quarter we decided to explore on foot and we were fascinated with the network on narrow lane ways containing bars, shops of all sorts, cages etc. We would leave the hotel about 10am and wander the narrow streets of the old city and arrive back at the hostel around 2pm after having lunch or bringing it back with us. Then it was siesta time with the fan on full blast and the windows wide open!! Then around 4.30 we would head out again for another walkabout that would end at a bar/cafe for the sangria and tapas for dinner. On the first day out we found a bar and decided on a pint of shandy each. It was Made with limoncello and lager and was so refreshing we must get the recipe. While we were there a local came in for a beer and he was very friendly and chatted to us in English of course about the local area and it's history. Very interesting.
Yesterday, Friday, we went to the Cathedral and while there we went to 11am Mass, in Spanish of course but easy enough to follow just couldn't really tell you what the homily was about.
With the holiday time and cruise ships in the harbour as well as a big soccer game the place was simply crowded with people. The cafes were busy especially those on the main thoroughfares like ours, La Ramblas. There were lots of younger people in the crowd but so many smokers!! And no care about butt disposal either.
