In almost two years in China, I've only cooked once.  Not once have I been bored by the array of culinary choice that lines street after street, and even more refreshing is the opportunity to enjoy food whilst - in some cases quite literally - sitting on the street in the balmy Guangdong evenings.  Most of the time these days I can even handle the language well enough to order the food I want which is a marked change from my early point, nod, smile and hope experiences. Actually, I miss the awaiting the surprise of a meal cooked in a way I could never have conceived, or even more so of some creature I'd never thought of eating appearing on a dish in front of me.

Well, much as I love eating out, I have re-discovered an old, long forgotten pleasure in the last few weeks: cooking myself.  I'm not sure how or why Michelle and I decided to eat more at home, but the simple tasks of shopping in the market (where I still don't recognise half the stuff on sale) and heading upstairs for an hour of chopping, washing, frying, boiling and all the other things you need to take care of in the kitchen have provided a pleasant reminder not only of how much I enjoy cooking meals, but also how the simple task of preparing dinner together can provide a great respite from thinking (especially about work!!)
