At Shanghai's heart lie the European architecture of the Bund on the west bank of the Huangpu and the huge glass coated towers of Pudong on the east side. Not sure where to go at 7 in the morning, I head for this iconic location to enjoy the views through the morning haze. I hope that I'd have them to myself for a while, but I was wrong, although far from disappointed.

These views may be iconic and recognised globally, they may be thronged with tourists all day, Shanghai might be an international megalopolis, but early in the morning, it is a place that belongs to local people, where they go to exercise, to meet and to enjoy themselves. There is something different going on whichever way you turn, but it is very much somewhere that belongs to the Shanghainese at this time of day.

It was a fascinating experience to see the many faces of the Bund, and one I tried to capture on my camera in the simplicity of black and white. Then, imagine people doing their morning exercises in Trafalgar Square, the courtyards of the Louvre, St Peter's Square or any other world renowned public space that's not a park......
